Gajner is a tiny oasis in the Thar desert, about 30km west of Bikaner. Filled with blackbucks, chinkara, neelgai, wild boar and fox, it was once the private hunting reserve of the maharajas of Bikaner. The palace was first built here on the banks of a man-made lake in the mid-18th century, but it was onlyin the early 19th century, about 170 years later, that Maharaja Ganga Singh spruced it up into a modern, luxurious resort for the express purpose of shikar diplomacy. This meant he used this opportunity to network with viceroys, governor generals and bureaucrats. He softened these british officials up with desert-bird hunts and in return extracted water rights for his dam projects and won favours for princely India against the rising threat of Congress domination in Indian politics.
The Maharaja’s house parties and hunts were legendary in the 1920′s and bags of imperial desert-birds would run into thousands, raising fear even then, of mass extinction.
